Happy Alchemy is the almost forgotten, nearly-lost project of Chicago musician Nicole Baksinskas. Let’s go back to 2004, before she ever gained recognition for her idiosyncratic talents as the singer of shoegaze band Lightfoils and guitarist for the 60’s throwback outfit Girl Group Chicago: The 21-year-old Baksinskas sat on her bed with a new instrument in her lap - a Suzuki Omnichord. In a fit of inspiration, she grabbed a warbly old tape recorder and proceeded to write and record 6 songs in one take, sometimes playing the omnichord with her feet while simultaneously playing guitar and singing. The results are lo-fi, dreamy and raw - the sounds of someone discovering their voice, creating purely for the pleasure of creation. The songs were (haphazardly) digitized and quickly dismissed.
The music was lost after Nicole’s Chicago apartment was burgled and her computer stolen, with it the only existing files of the music. Luckily, a long and fevered search resulted in the original cassette tape, which is restored and presented here for the first time ever, nearly a decade later, in it’s hiss-filled, monophonic glory.
